Some places in Amsterdam feel like they’ve been around forever, and Café Wildschut is one of them. Perched on Roelof Hartplein, this grand café has long been a go-to for locals and visitors alike, whether for a morning coffee, a business lunch, or a relaxed evening drink. But does it still live up to its reputation? I went to find out.

What I knew about Café Wildschut before I went
Café Wildschut is one of those names that comes up time and again when talking about classic Amsterdam spots. I knew it had been around for decades and had a reputation for its large, sun-trap terrace – practically legendary among those looking to soak up some rays with a beer in hand. Its location in Amsterdam-Zuid, close to the museums and shopping streets, means it attracts a mix of professionals, students, and tourists. And, of course, I’d heard about its timeless, brasserie-style interior that channels an effortlessly cool ’70s vibe with modern touches.

Beyond that? I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the food. It had always struck me as more of a drinks-and-people-watching spot than a culinary destination. Time to put that assumption to the test.

Let’s get lunching
I went for lunch with my colleagues, and with a group of ten, we were ready to put Wildschut’s kitchen to work. The menu is surprisingly extensive, covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a mix of café classics and a few unexpected twists.

I opted for the long-sliced smoked salmon focaccia, which came with wasabi mayo, capers, and marinated cucumber. The combination of flavours was spot on – fresh, slightly tangy, with just enough heat from the wasabi to keep things interesting.

My colleagues went for the Wildschut cheese-bacon burger (served on a multi-seed roll with fries) and the ever-classic Holtkamp beef croquettes with sourdough bread. Despite the lunchtime rush, the food arrived impressively fast.

Retro vibes and modern comfort
Beyond the food, the space itself deserves a mention. Inside, Wildschut’s interior is a mix of cozy and groovy, with a distinct ’70s influence – warm yellows, retro patterns, and soft lighting that makes it feel both nostalgic and modern. It’s comfortable, stylish, and just the right amount of old-school.

What’s the verdict?
Café Wildschut delivers on multiple fronts. It’s the kind of place that can shape-shift depending on your needs—whether that’s a morning coffee, a leisurely lunch, or post-work drinks that stretch into the evening. The food is fresh, fairly priced, and served with surprising speed. The terrace? Absolutely as good as its reputation suggests – a prime spot for catching the sun while watching the world go by.

Would I come back? Absolutely. Whether for a solo coffee, a dinner with friends, or another sun-drenched lunch, Wildschut has proven itself as a classic for a reason.
