t’Huis aan de Amstel: The perfect spot for sunshine and sips

It’s officially spring, and that means it’s time for me to start my forever search of the perfect terrace to snack and sip away in the sunshine. I don’t mean to ever find one, I just enjoy the search. So, when my colleagues and I finished a training session nearby the Amstel and they wanted to have some lunch in the sun before heading back to the office, I ended up at the first contender of the year: t’Huis aan de Amstel. And honestly? I’m glad these local heroes introduced me to here.

What I knew about t’Huis aan de Amstel before I went:

Not much, honestly. My colleagues told me about the terrace and the relaxed vibe, but that was pretty much it. What I got was a place that felt like it could quickly become my spot. Cosy, eclectic, and right by the river. My kind of scene.

The vibe – Homely, with a side of artsy

First things first: when you walk in, you get this I’m at home but also in a cool art gallery vibe. It’s got this labyrinth of rooms (seriously, I kept finding new spaces) that each have their own personality. Some of them are perfect for chilling out, others feel a bit more like you’re about to fall into a conversation that could start a revolution.

Then there’s the garden. Oof, the garden. You know when a spot just screams sunshine and wine? This is it. The Amstel is literally a stone’s throw away, and if the weather’s on your side, I can’t think of a better place to kick back and let the day disappear.

What we ate – Simple but wow

So, about the food. I had the open sandwich with home-smoked salmon. It was light but still packed with that smokey goodness that’s hard to resist. My colleagues went for a cheeseburger and risotto with mushrooms, sheep cheese, and Grana Padano (seriously, the cheese was sensational). The food came out way quicker than I expected, even though it was packed, which is always a bonus when your stomach’s reminding you it’s time to eat.

The menu – Seasonal and fresh

They work with a seasonal menu, which is always a win in my book. From breakfast to dinner, everything feels fresh, local, and crafted with a bit of thought. There’s something about knowing the ingredients change with the seasons that makes each visit feel a bit special. I was more than happy with my choice, but I’m already eyeing up a few other dishes I need to try next time.

The space – Perfect for any occasion

Here’s the kicker: t’Huis aan de Amstel isn’t just a café; it’s an experience. It’s perfect for a laid-back lunch, but it’s also ideal for an event or meeting. The upstairs rooms are available for workshops, dinners, and private gatherings. And honestly, I can’t think of a better backdrop for a meeting or a celebration. You get a touch of art, a sprinkle of history, and a lot of good karma.

What’s the verdict?

If you’re in the mood to escape the usual Amsterdam frenzy, t’Huis aan de Amstel should be on your radar. It’s not just about the location or the food (although both are pretty amazing); it’s the vibe that really makes it special. Whether you’re there for a quick bite or planning to spend the whole afternoon, it’s a place that’s got this perfect mix of chilled vibes, charm, and just the right amount of creative buzz.

So yeah, next time you’re by the Amstel and need a spot to kick back? You know where to go. I’ll probably be there already.
